It’s not “math rock,” damn it, it’s just catchy

Bands like Foals and Tokyo Police Club are described by some hipsters (more bitching about hipsters later) as “math rock” or “indie rock” or some kind of faux cerebral subgenre that doesn’t exist. In the end, it’s catchy stuff reminiscent of the “skinny tie bands” of the late ’70s and early ’80s New Wave and punk movements.

Still, call it what you want, both bands make solid, catchy modern rock music. They aren’t as great as the Pitchforkian bloggers and hyperbole blitherers (not a word, I know) make them seem, but they’re still pretty damn good.

Tokyo Police Club

Tokyo Police Club comes from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, signed to Saddle Creek Records out of Omaha, Nebraska, so, no, they aren’t from Tokyo. Their newest record, Elephant Shell, was released digitally last month and will be released “officially” tomorrow. Here are a couple cuts.

Foals

Foals is an Oxford, England five-piece with a unique sound that includes - on occasion - a brass section. Hey, I’ve got no problem with that. They’re signed to Sub Pop Records in the U.S. Check it…
